Camping tents come in various sizes that can accommodate anywhere between one to ten people. Camping tents are generally designed to be transportable by cars. For people who like camping solo, there are smaller tents that are light enough to be carried for long distances on a person's back, or even a bicycle or boat. Camping tents can be made out of a variety of fabric including cotton or canvas, nylon, and polyester. Since cotton absorbs water, it normally tends to get very heavy when wet. Nylon and polyester are much lighter and do not absorb as much water as cotton does but they may deteriorate over time.

When selecting a camping tent, there are many different factors to take into consideration. The type of camping is an important factor. For trekking or backpacking, the tent has to be carried by a person the whole day long, which means a heavy or bulky tent would obviously not be a very wise choice. A light tent that can be packed easily and carried for long distances would be ideal.

On the other hand, if the camping is to be at one site for a week or two, then comfort would be your goal. Big, roomy tents that can hold a lot of equipment and supplies would be the right choice here.

Season is an important factor too. The kind of tent used during summer would greatly differ from the kind used in winter. There are also some tents designed for one specific season and some designed for multiple seasons.

Cost and size are two other major considerations to be kept in mind.
